Though born in California, Chrisann grew up in the mountains of western North Carolina on a college campus, where 181 pets of various kinds laid the groundwork for a lifelong dedication to animals. She was valedictorian of her high school class, and a Johnston Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While obtaining her B.S. in Zoology at Carolina, she was editor of the university's yearbook and was recognized by Phi Beta Kappa in her junior year. She received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1985 at Purdue University, where she was inducted into Phi Zeta (the veterinary honor society).

Chrisann is a member of the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association), AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association), MCVMA, CVMA, the Cornell Feline Health Center, and the Veterinary Cancer Society.

She lives with her two cats (Tinker and Franklin), and two dogs (a yellow Lab named Rio and a French bulldog named Mickey) who accompany her at work.
